Mercedes Benz SL Klasse (R107) 450 SL
This 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is finished in Dark Red with a brown convertible top over a Bamboo leather interior. Power is provided by a 4.5-liter V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. The car was sold new to a prominent Los Angeles law firm, and was purchased by the second owner in Tarzana in 1977 with 21k miles. It remained with the second owner’s family through acquisition by the current owner in 2009. Under current ownership the car has received reupholstered seats as well as a new timing chain tensioner, water pump, thermostat, tie rod ends, and more detailed in the listing. Now showing 38k miles, this 450SL is offered on behalf of the current owner with a color-matched hardtop, factory literature, build and data cards, records.
The car is finished in Dunkelrot (DB542), and the seller states a repaint was performed some time ago due to fading in the original finish. Minor dings and fine scratches are noted in some areas, and close-up photos of the trim are provided in the image gallery. The car retains California blue plates, and a 1988 World Series bumper sticker is present on the rear bumper.
A color-keyed removable hardtop is included, and the brown convertible top is shown raised in the gallery. Factory 14″ Bundt alloy wheels are mounted with Michelin Harmony tires measuring 205/70, and the seller reports that the car received new rear brake calipers, hoses, and pads in 2016.
The cabin features Bamboo upholstery (267), and the seller reports that the seats were reupholstered in GAHH leather with horsehair pads in 2020 due to splits in the original materials. An AUX input has been added to the Becker Europa II stereo, and the car is equipped with air conditioning, power windows, and central locking. Photos of the headliners for both the hard and soft tops are provided in the image gallery.
The instrument cluster case and lenses were cleaned and the analog clock was repaired in 2009. Instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,800-rpm redline, an analog clock, and a combination gauge housing the fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature gauges. Just over 38k miles are shown on the six-digit odometer, approximately 600 of which were added by the current owner.
Power is provided by a 4.5-liter M117 V8 that sends drive to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. Factory-rated output was 190 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. An aftermarket electric fan has been added. Services under current ownership include a new timing chain tensioner in 2009, and a new water pump, thermostat, vent hose, points, rubber fuel hoses, and a fuel injection system service in 2016.
